A 10-week interactive training module on using the open-source 3D software package Blender in the context of 2D animation previsualisation and concepting.

The workshop is designed for concept artists, animators and designers working in animation for film and broadcast. Participants will explore Blender as part of a 2D previsualisation pipeline, integrating with other environments such as Adobe CC.

The module is structured into three parts, covering environmental design, modelling and rigging for character previsualisation, and Blender-native concepting tools.

Course Content:

  • The workshops will take place over 10 weeks in sessions of 1.5-2 hours’ duration.
  • Temporary access will be given to a recording of the session for revision.
  • Session notes and resource sheet will be available for participants.

1 Environment design Modelling block-outs, basic animatics
2 Environmental concepting, lighting, quick renders
3 Camera set-up, rendering for 2D integration
4 Character concept and design Sculpting and modelling, 3D performance
5 Retopology intro, baking and UVs
6 Rigging for pre-viz, pose and action block-in
7 Basic VFX and compositing


8 Blender – 3D for 2D 2D animation in Blender – overview
9 Greasepencil – 2D to 3D
10 Show-and-tell, pipeline and hand-off

Participants should have the software downloaded before the workshops, and ideally will have familiarised themselves with keyboard shortcuts and the available workspace layouts. Here is a good resource to start with:

Prospective participants will be animators, film makers or 3D designers with some experience in graphics or 3D software (e.g. Adobe CC, Autodesk packages), or concept artists and directors who want to explore the potential of 3D tools for their practice.

IMPORTANT: Places are open to Irish based Enterprise, SMEs and sole traders only. Companies and sole traders outside the ROI do not qualify for the Immersive Technologies Skillnet subsidised workshop.

There is a 7 day cancellation policy in place. Fees cannot be refunded if places are cancelled inside of the 7 day period prior to the commencement date (but can be transferred to another participant up to 24hrs in advance of commencement date).
